UI/UX Audit Checklist for Apps and Websites

A practical audit framework for finding where users hesitate, abandon tasks or need unnecessary support.

Choose the journeys that matter

Do not begin by reviewing every colour and corner radius. Select the tasks that create user value or business risk: registration, purchase, booking, payment, search, support or a core operational workflow.

Walk through each journey with realistic data and on the devices customers actually use.

Clarity and navigation

  • Can a new user explain what the product does?
  • Is the next action visually and verbally clear?
  • Do labels use customer language rather than internal terms?
  • Can users recover when they enter the wrong section?
  • Are important actions reachable on smaller mobile screens?

Forms, errors and trust

  • Ask only for information needed at that moment
  • Explain format and validation before submission
  • Preserve entered data when something fails
  • Use specific error messages with a recovery action
  • Show fees, permissions and security moments before commitment

Accessibility and resilience

  • Readable contrast and scalable text
  • Keyboard focus and meaningful labels
  • Touch targets with enough spacing
  • Loading, slow network and offline behaviour
  • Empty, first-use, restricted and completed states

Turn findings into a roadmap

Record evidence, affected users, business impact and recommended change. Separate quick fixes from structural redesign and engineering work.

A good audit ends with priorities that a product team can sequence—not a gallery of subjective comments.

Frequently asked

Clear answers before you decide.

Does a UI/UX audit require user testing?

Not always, but analytics, support data and targeted user sessions make the findings stronger. An expert review is a useful start, not a substitute for all evidence.

Can an audit improve conversion?

It can reveal friction in important journeys. Conversion improvement should then be measured after prioritised changes are implemented.
