E-commerce App Development Checklist: From Product Catalogue to Fulfilment

The customer app is only the visible layer. Plan the operations behind every order before development begins.

Commerce starts before the interface

A polished store cannot compensate for unclear inventory, pricing, fulfilment or return rules. Document the commercial model and operational owners before finalising screens.

For a marketplace, add seller onboarding, commissions, payouts, disputes and catalogue approval to the same conversation.

Customer experience checklist

  • Fast category, search, filter and product discovery
  • Accurate variants, availability, delivery and pricing
  • Guest or low-friction account creation
  • Address, coupon, shipping and tax handling
  • Secure payment with clear failure and retry states
  • Order tracking, cancellation, return and support

Operations checklist

  • Product and inventory administration
  • Order routing and fulfilment status
  • Refund, cancellation and exception queues
  • Promotion and content controls
  • Customer support history and notifications
  • Role-based access, reports and audit records

Payment integration is more than a button

A Razorpay or other gateway integration should verify payments on the server, reconcile orders, handle webhooks and protect against duplicate processing. The customer needs an honest state when a payment is pending or interrupted.

Refund ownership, settlement reporting and failed-payment recovery should be decided before launch.

Launch with measurable journeys

  • Product view to add-to-cart rate
  • Checkout completion and payment failures
  • Search queries with no useful result
  • Cancellation and return reasons
  • Repeat purchase and support volume
Frequently asked

Clear answers before you decide.

Can one backend support web, Android and iOS commerce?

Yes. A well-designed shared backend can serve connected storefronts while keeping catalogue, inventory, customers and orders consistent.

What changes for a multi-vendor marketplace?

You need seller onboarding, listing approval, commission, settlement, seller operations and dispute workflows in addition to the buyer journey.
